Unlocking Pathways Center is dedicated to empowering nonspeaking, minimally speaking, and unreliably speaking individuals through the Spelling to Communicate (S2C) method.
A person who speaks little or not at all has very limited verbal abilities. They may be able to produce only a few words, if any, and often find it challenging to communicate through speech.
A person who is minimally speaking may be able to use some speech to produce a number of words or phrases but does not have enough speech for robust and flexible communication.
A person who is unreliably speaking may have the ability to speak, but is not always able to access their speech intentionally or communicatively.

The primary objective is to build synchrony between the brain and body. Highly trained communication partners guide this process by using a structured hierarchy of verbal and gestural prompts to teach these motor skills.
Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is an approach designed to help individuals with motor challenges develop the purposeful motor skills needed to point to letters and spell words as an alternative form of communication (AAC).
With consistent practice, individuals advance from using letterboards to typing on a keyboard. As motor control improves, their ability to communicate also evolves—from expressing more concrete ideas to engaging in more abstract communication.
